Every wine shop in the Western Hemisphere is stacked with cases of bubbly and rosé for Valentine’s Day, but we thought we’d go a different route. Reds. Big Reds, baby! Okay, and some quieter, subtler reds to share with those you love tonight and throughout this chilly winter month. Here goes…
Silver Oak 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Grape varietals: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 0.5% Malbe
From the winery…
"The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant representation of Napa Valley Cabernet from a cool vintage. It presents an opaque garnet hue in the glass and reveals aromas of sandalwood and roasted meats. Flavors of vanilla, coffee beans and raspberries are buttressed by dusty tannins, firm acidity and a mouth-coating texture. Given proper cellaring, this wine should provide drinking pleasure through 2029."

This vintage of Silver Oak’s flagship “Napa” bottling is a bold, full bodied Cabernet blend guaranteed to thrill devotees of Napa’s most iconic red wine. A bouquet of inviting black currant, boysenberries, and sage introduce a deftly balanced palate offering tightly wound notes of cassis, dark berries, plus hints of espresso and vanilla cream on the finish. Enjoy tonight (recommend decanting) or feel free to cellar for 5 – 7 years.
Silver Oak 2012 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Grape varietals: 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot
Tasting Notes from www.silveroak.com:
The 2012 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a lively and full-bodied expression of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from an exceptional vintage. It has a lovely garnet color and opens with aromas of black currant, orange zest and raspberry. These aromas are framed by nuanced notes of vanilla, marshmallow and cocoa, eliciting an effect reminiscent of chocolate-covered berries. The attack is rich and gives way to a mid-palate with breadth and depth, supported with refreshing acidity and integrated, dusty tannins. This wine has power with an unusual vitality and structural balance. Given proper cellar conditions, this wine will provide drinking pleasure through 2034.
Merryvale 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Grape varietals: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Malbec, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot
92 Points, The Wine Advocate
Tasting Notes from Robert Parker
“Elegant and savory, with plenty of finesse and complexity, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa shows all the friendly sides of this vintage. Beautiful brightness, purity, potential balance and equilibrium, power without excess and sweet tannin, this wine is a rather classic Cabernet Sauvignon. With lots of black fruits, flowers and no hard edges, it’s not a blockbuster, but very well-crafted. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.”
Bacio Divino 2013 “Divine Kiss”
Grape varietals: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Sangiovese, and 3% Cabernet Franc
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate – 92 Points
Wine Spectator online – 90 points
Tasting Notes adapted from www.baciodivino.com
Made from a blend of the BEST fruit in a given vintage, the 2012 was a near perfect vintage in the Napa Valley, producing great Sangiovese, excellent Syrah, and, of course, world-class cab sites.
Rich black current and cherry aromas exude from this glass, the fruit on the palate is framed nicely by the sweet cigar box spice of the oak. This is a full-bodied wine with an exceptionally long, yet elegant, finish. The fine silky tannins of the valley floor are very evident. A firm acidity leads us to believe that this wine will age well for the next 10-15 years.
