Soon to be available through Marram Fine Wines in British Columbia, the 2014 vintage received an impressive 93 points from Steven Tanzer in Vinous.  Tanzer's wine scoring methodology places the wine at "Outstanding".  The winery began with the planting of a single estate vineyard in 2007 and has since expanded to include three estate vineyards. MR de Compostella Wins Outstanding Accolades

Stellenbosch wine producer Bruwer Raats has been honoured with their third 5-Star rating from South Africa's definitive Platter's Wine Guide for their 2014 MR de Compostella Bordeaux blend. This is the third vintage to receive the coveted award, following in the footsteps of the 2009 and 2013 vintages.

The MR de Compostella, or "constellation of stars", is a joint effort that saw its first vintage in 2004, made by winemakers Bruwer Raats and Mzokhona Mvemve. It is an elegant Bordeaux blend that has consistently received high praise from wine critics both in South Africa and abroad.  Other accolades for the MR de Compostella include:

MR de Compostella 2014:

MR de Compostella 2013:

MR de Compostella 2012:

Winemaker Bruwer Raats says that this consistent excellence is one of the benchmarks they have set for themselves.  "The MR de Compostella has gained a name for itself as being a consistently high quallity wine and having the Platter Guide confirm this with its third 5 stars makes it really special."  The Platter Guide was the first of its kind in South Africa and 36 years on, it remains very popular amongst consumers there.  Raats continues, "A five-star rating is not easily achieved, so we are very pleased."

Domaine Serene Sets Up a Family Trust to Protect the Evenstad Family Legacy for Future Generations

Grace and Ken EvenstadIt's the way of the world these days.  Big conglomerates are buying up small businesses and with their volume, buying and pricing power, they're putting other small, family-owned businesses, well -- out of business.

And so it goes in wine industry, with small vineyards, wineries and brands being bought up by wine corporations or private equity firms. Often, these small, family-run operations began with a dream and a vision and a couple of bootstraps, some sweat equity and lots of talent and good fortune.  And all too often, that vision gets lots when the needs of corporate shareholders get involved, at the expense of the artistry and passion that made the wines so terrific in the first place.

To avoid this happening to their lifeblood and legacy, Domaine Serene Winery, founders Grace and Ken Evenstad have committed to preserving a legacy of quality for future generations by setting up the Evenstad Family Trust. The Trust, they hope, will ensure that their commitment to producing the best quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay will be supported and the family business can feasibly maintain its financial independence for many generations.

They've also taken further measures to ensure that Domaine Serene's future is secure and that the property will never be sold, the Eventads have created a succession plan for their grandkids that has them studying in a special winery internship program.  Their grandchildren are being trained to take on key roles and maintain the brand's quality for years to come.

Domaine Serene wines have received more that one hundred 90+ point scores on recent releases of their wines. Most notably, their 2012 Winery Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir outperformed more that 500 international Pinot Noirs, including six Grand Cru and 26 Premier Cru Burgundies to win a coveted Platinum "Best in Show" medal at the 2016 Decanter World Wine Awards, held by Decanter Magazine.

The MR de Compostella 2014 - New Release!

June 10th marked the much anticipated release of Bruwer Raats' MR de Compostella 2014 from South Africa.

The MR de Compostella has garnered nothing but top awards since it's first vintage in 2004.  Most recently, the 2013 vintage was awarded 5 stars in the 2016 John Platter, scored 94 points by Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate, and 95 points by Tim Atkin. It was one of the Top 5 SA luxury red wines and rated in the TOP 2 performing investment wines in the Livex SA.  The previous four vintages all scored over 94 points from the Wine Advocate.

Bruwer’s comments on the vintage: “The 2014 growing season was earmarked by unusually cooler growing conditions and a smaller crop than usual.  Due to the longer ripening period, the wine shows beautiful red and black current fruit with a complex, but extremely elegant structure.  The MR de Compostella 2014 reminds me a lot of the 2007 vintage with great freshness, purity packed in a very elegant manner. The wine has great maturation potential.”

This wine is highly allocated, so if you have an interest in carrying it in your restaurant or retail shop, be sure to reach out to our team at Marram Wines to let them know. We will try our very best to get our hands on some of this incredible vintage for you!!
